Wealthy Beijingers Are Some of the Least Happy People in China
By Justine Lopez
Feeling depressed? Well, it turns out you’re not alone. According to a recent study by Tsinghua University, wealthy people who live in the biggest Chinese cities are among the most unhappy people in the country. And Beijingers were among the least happy.
To conduct the study, researchers analyzed social media posts based on whether they used positive or negative words and ranked all of China’s major cities using a “happiness index.”
Beijing was one of the least happy cities on the list, coming it at 273. Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen fared better, but they also failed to crack the top 100.
So which Chinese city is the happiest? It turns out Luzhou in Sichuan Province is the place to live.
The study also examined the correlation between wealth and happiness and found that money really doesn’t buy happiness.
The people in areas with a GDP of less than RMB45,000 (per person) were found to be more happy than those living in places where the average GDP was higher.
